Match day thread - NUFC v Norwich

Post by Toondes » Sat Feb 01, 2020 12:25 pm

Norwich City (h)

The Magpies are in Premier League home action today, hosting the Canaries in a 3pm kick-off.

The last L7 tickets are still on public sale.

There are no Metro services between Benton and Monkseaton today (Saturday) or Sunday.

The usual NUFC Foodbank collection will be taking place on Strawberry Place from 1pm.

NUFC: Newcastle will be without Jonjo Shelvey, Paul Dummett, Dwight Gayle, Javier Manquillo, Yoshinori Muto and Emil Krafth. Andy Carroll isn't expected to feature.

It's anticipated that there will be PL debuts for United's trio of January loan signings, Danny Rose, Valentino Lazaro and Nabil Bentaleb.

NCFC: Benjamin Godfrey serves the last of his three game suspension but Todd Cantwell, Emi Buendia and Ibrahim Amadou could all return.

Ahead of their visit to Newcastle, Daniel Farke's side won 2-1 at Burnley in the FA Cup Fourth Round on Saturday.

Six points adrift at the bottom of the Premier League and trailing United by 13 points and six places, City's current away record is unsurprisingly the worst in the top flight, taking just five points from a possible 36.

They came courtesy of a 0-2 success at Everton and draws at Bournemouth (0-0) and Leicester City (1-1).

Ex-Magpie Tim Krul should make his first playing return SJP since leaving the club in 2017 and will doubtless received a good reception, having made 183 senior appearances in all competitions for us between November 2006 and October 2015.

Referee: It's Martin Atkinson, for the fifth time at SJP this season - our latest theory is that he is a franchise holder for burger vans on the A69.

This latest appointment (after the visits of Arsenal, Brighton, Bournemouth and Leicester here) means that the West Yorkshire-based official will have done 13 straight NUFC games at SJP since a 0-3 loss at Everton back in March 2015.

VAR intervention comes courtesy of Peter Bankes - Atkinson's regular studio buddy.

Travel:

Metro: There will be no Metro services between Benton and Monkseaton on Saturday or Sunday. Bus replacement 900 will be in operation between Four Lane Ends and Monkseaton.

Bus: Match buses run from the Metro Centre (X50) and Gosforth Great Park (Q3), with Magpie Mover tickets accepted on both services. details

Stats:

Norwich's last two visits to Tyneside were both goal laden: Dwight Gayle' hat-trick the highlight of a last-gasp 4-3 Championship victory in 2016 and Gini Wijnaldum going one better during a 6-2 Premier League success the previous year.

With seven wins and a draw, United are unbeaten at SJP in Premier League fixtures against City.

Don't ask me why but I'm feeling confident. We need a good strong win, not these dour smash and grabs as of late. 3-1. Almiron, Hayden, Lascelles.

I reckon we'll win comfortably and I've put us on my accumulator.

So it'll be 1-0 to Norwich.

Looking forward to this game, mainly to see our new signings and what they can bring to the team. Can see us winning by a few.

Newcastle 3 Norwich 0

Do we expect Rose, Lazaro and Bentaleb all to start then? I can't see any reason why not.

Lazaro and Bentaleb to both start, I think Ritchie will start with Rose on the bench though.

Agree. Think we might see Rose introduced today then starting v Oxford. Probably lacking match sharpness. If Lazaro is to be a RWB he'll start I'd say but if we see him more of a forward I think he'll be on the bench. Hopefully Bentaleb and Hayden in the middle of the park.

I hate feeling optimistic because it inevitably leads to disappointment, but I'm sensing a 3-1 win and we'll have more possession than Norwich...

Wouldnt be surprised to see ASM on the bench and Lazaro in on the right wing. Think now we have options we will be more cautious with ASM.

Dubravka

Schar Lascelles Clark

Yedlin Bentaleb Hayden Ritchie

Lazaro Joelinton Almiron

If we can get Schar and Lejeune back to their best we have a really good team there, I like what we are building if I'm honest, people complained about us bidding 40m for a midfielder, but throw Soumare into that midfield ahead of Hayden, and get Joelinton scoring or bring in someone else and we could challenge for top 6 with that imo.

I think you need Hayden or someone to hold. Not sure Bentaleb or Soumare will play that Kante role
