Match thread - Oxford v NUFC ( FA cup 4 replay )

Post by Toondes » Mon Feb 03, 2020 1:35 pm

Newcastle play their fourth game in the FA Cup this season when they face League One side Oxford United in a Fourth Round replay on Tuesday.

It's an 8.05pm kick-off at the Kassam Stadium and the tie will be shown live on BBC1.

Steve Bruce's side have sold their allocation of 1,800 places at the 12,500 capacity, three-sided stadium that opened for business in 2001.

An outcome must be achieved on the night via 30 minutes extra time or on penalties if required.

The Magpies haven't made it into the Fifth Round since 2006 and this will be their seventh attempt to do so since winning 2-0 at Cheltenham Town a mere 14 years ago.

At stake for the winners is a Fifth Round visit to Championship side West Bromwich Albion in early March.

NUFC: Deals for Valentino Lazaro and Danny Rose weren't concluded before the first tie with Oxford, meaning that neither can play in the replay.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Steve Bruce said that he expected Fabian Schar, Florian Lejeune and both Longstaffs to be in his starting lineup on Tuesday.

Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle, Yoshinori Muto, Jonjo Shelvey, Paul Dummett, Javier Manquillo and Emil Krafth are all still unavailable.

OUFC: Ahead of our visit, Karl Robinson's side beat Blackpool 2-1 on Saturday in League One.

James Henry, Cameron Brannagan and George Thorne all faced the Seasiders after missing the game at SJP. Matty Taylor also returned and remained unused on the bench.

Ben Woodburn remains unavailable.

Transfer deadline day saw them sell midfield duo Shandon Baptiste and Tariqe Fosu to Brentford - both players having started at Newcastle.

Stats:

The replay winners face an away tie against Championship side West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns.

Due to the Premier League "mid-season" break, Fifth Round ties will be staged on or around Wednesday March 4th. Replays in the Fifth Round have been abolished.

We last faced Albion in the FA Cup in 2010, losing 2-4 at the Hawthorns in the Fourth Round - both teams in the second tier that season.

That was the fourth Baggies versus Magpies pairing in this competition, after 1938 (lost 0-1 away in Third Round), 1954 (lost 2-3 away in Fifth Round) and 1974 (won 3-0 away in Fifth Round).

This is our second visit to the Kassam Stadium, following on from our regrettable debut in 2017 when second tier Newcastle were defeated 0-3 in this competition by the third tier U's.

Three years on, only Isaac Hayden and Matt Ritchie remain in our current squad from the 13 players who featured for us that day (Dan Barlaser and Achraf Lazaar are both out on loan).

Fourth Round replays:

Tue 04.02.2020:
Birmingham City v Coventry City (7:45pm)
Cardiff City v Reading (7.45pm)
Derby County v Northampton Town (7.45pm)
Liverpool v Shrewsbury Town (7.45pm)
Oxford United v Newcastle United (8.05pm) BBC1

Wed 05.02.2020:
Spurs v Southampton (7.45pm) BT

Fifth Round draw:

Chelsea v Shrewsbury Town or Liverpool
Leicester City v Coventry or Birmingham
Northampton or Derby v Manchester United
Portsmouth v Arsenal
Reading or Cardiff City v Sheffield United
Sheffield Wednesday v Manchester City
Southampton or Spurs v Norwich City
West Bromwich Albion v Newcastle or Oxford

Brucey's said Schar and Lejeune are in, plus both Longstaffs if fit. Add to that presumably Joelinton (unless someones suddenly fit).

Would be nice to maybe try something different, though not sure about those two in a back four.

Maybe Brucie is going to play Schar & Lejeune up front.

Should play Sorensen up front. He might be young but he's never going to get anywhere without minutes.

They really need to find him a loan where he'll actually play. Otherwise I understand why he isn't trusted with senior minutes if he can't even prove productive in League 1/2.

Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll field their reserves so that they can focus on their promotion push.

Calvert-Lewin never really produced in lower leagues and now he's scoring goals for Everton. It won't work every time but quite often the best thing is to just throw players in, forwards especially.

Kane did nothing of note during 3 or 4 loan spells in League One / The Championship when he was 18-19. As ALF says it's not always the case, but sometimes just give someone a go and see what they can do. If he's not given a chance against a League One side he'll never get a chance.

Whether you're in the camp of Joelinton needs time / better service or Joelinton is s*** I think we all agree a match off to give him a break isn't the worst thing in the world.

I'd play them together. When he brought f***ing Atsu on in the original tie I nearly cried. He can't be any worse than that.

Didn't they sell a few of their players? Surely that'll play in our favour
