France cancels Ligue 1 season

Post by Bodacious Benny » Tue Apr 28, 2020 4:00 pm

Nothing confirmed about promotion, relegation etc but this is surely the correct decision.

Even tho games could be played behind closed doors it still puts people at risk, and not just players. Physios, medics etc all need to be in close contact with players and will put themselves at risk. And in theory what happens if games go ahead and one player comes down with the virus? Do the entire team have to isolate? What about the players and staff from teams they recently played against?

Obviously it’s all about money, but doesn’t make sense at all to play games again this season. There won’t be any fans in stadiums for the rest of the calendar year I suspect as the number of people allowed to gather in any one place will be restricted for most of the year.

But if we're accepting that these restrictions will be in place well into next season why are we rushing to cancel this one? We might as well finish this one off when it comes back rather than try and cram a season in after Christmas.

Obviously this is purely a sporting fairness view rather than a financial one which presumably fucks this.

Play behind closed doors, have constant testing of players, officials and staff, strict isolation measures on everyone involved, anyone breaking isolation measures, eg your Grealish's and Kean's, ban them from the remaining games of the season.

Players could even wear modified PPE, edgar Davids style glasses and modified face masks. Long sleeved shirts or base layers including legs and be made to wear gloves.

Any time the ball leaves play use the opportunity to wipe down the ball with anti bacterial solutions. Also generally restrict staff and players to designated areas and make everyone social distance apart from the 90 minutes on the pitch, and restricted all non essential contact eg celebrations, hand shakes, no tussles on set pieces.

I don't think any of that would be difficult to enforce or would be unreasonable.

Just that first paragraph should do the job, it shouldn't be too hard to isolate players in mansions and have someone from the club delivering food etc. Gets trickier with referees etc, but minimising contacts and banning anyone with symptoms or anyone who has been near someone with symptoms should be safe enough. I can't see it in the next month or so but later in the summer could be possible, at which point you conclude this season.

Do you isolate players from their families too? What happens if part of your squad comes down with it? Where is the line to cancel a game because of illness? Is it worth putting camera people at risk? Will it make it more likely for people to congregate together to watch games?

Season just needs scrapping, at the very least postponing indefinitely.

Players families will be as affected as the players bar a very small number who might have wives with jobs, so no. A line could be drawn on numbers of players out, but realistically it shouldn't be happening at this stage unless they're doing something silly, they shouldn't have left the house for a month. Sky are still running sports news etc, outdoors with cameras miles apart is safer than it would be in studios, and while I know there'll be infrastructure to deal with that should still be possible with social distancing. On the last point if they do they're f***ing stupid, I'd like to think not.

It's a very dangerous disease, but given we're likely to be scaling down social distancing in 6-8 weeks anyway and we're perfectly happy to risk people in Tesco and Dominoes I'm fairly sure we can keep footballers safe to play a couple of games in the summer, or later if necessary.

On your very final point I've made my feelings clear, I find the idea of starting a new season before ending this one absurd from a sporting perspective. Once it's safe this one should resume.

This is the point for me. It’s all very well to say “just isolate” but if a player comes down with the virus it throws up all kinds of questions. And if games are Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday and players are isolating then you’re pretty much saying “don’t see your families until the season is over”.

Makes no sense to me to restart.

If people are still infected after a month of isolation, followed by continued isolation followed by vigorous testing, followed by taking all possible hygienic precautions. Then we are pretty much all f***ed.

NHS staff cant get tested but we are suggesting footballers should? It's easy to say just isolate but if I was a footballer and you were suggesting I should isolate from my family too for a game I'd teel you to get lost. Football isn't important and I think people are underestimating how hard it is to get going again even when you forget about fans being reimbursed for tickets, setting up for TV and the lower leagues being in such a bad state if this goes on for much longer there may not be much of a pyramid left.

Let's knock it on the head, or at the very very least potlstpone it as long as possible and focus on saving as many teams as we can.

On Colly's point on both of them I do get what you're saying but I just don't think it's worth it. Technically very feasible but we need to look at our own pyramid, saving teams and what other leagues are doing too.

I'm not sure how writing off this season helps teams lower in the pyramid?

It doesn't at all. I don't think that is really a concern under the circumstances though.

Where do you get this idea that they have to fully isolate from their household? If their family are fully isolating then I find it highly unlikely this will spontaneously come down with Covid-19, and common sense says if a household was infected then the players wouldn't be involved.

As for testing, money talks, football clubs will easily get testing via private sources, NHS cant get tested because the government is clueless and still hung up on brexit to accept EU help. Germany had tested something like 1.3million people by April 4th, we are only just at 700k on he 28th.

It would at least help change the conversation. Pyramid is in danger of collapsing but people are 100% focused on finishing the PL.

What if they aren't fully isolating? What if they shop, or exercise outside or break the rules? Then what happens? Only takes one player to catch it, get a false negative then half the league has got it.

I know money talks but the PR for testing PL players without putting anything towards NHS testing would be horrific.

The whole thing just stinks of rushing back into it to please people, rather than following sensible advice. Shouldn't be a time scale on it until we know it can definatley go ahead.

I mean I know none of us are massive international events planners but players wearing PPE and wiping down the balls? Really is it worth it?

Few articles after a very brief search on the logistics of it all, looks like players would need to be isolated from family, up to 500 people at a stadium and 1 infection could bring it all down.
